TIPI FAQs

We’re sure you have a lot of questions and we’re happy to help if you’d like to get in touch – Drop us a line. In the mean time have a look through some of our most frequently asked questions. You’ll find info all about hiring tipis, from how our real fire works to our favourite local suppliers.

WHAT LOCATIONS DO YOU COVER?

We’re based in the South Island of New Zealand in the Wanaka & Queenstown area, but we love a good tipi road trip, and more than happy to travel. Chat with us

What should I consider when choosing a site?

Does your site have good access for 4X4 vehicles? How exposed is the site? Is there a backup available?
Is the ground flat & well drained?
Does the site have provision of services eg. toilets, water and power?
If you are at all unsure about your site, please get in touch and we are more than happy to do a no obligation site visit to check it and see.

How many tipis will I need?

Our tipis have many possible layouts, to suit any event from weddings to corporate, from 1 tipi to 6 tipis joined together, with a capacity between 50 – 300+ seated guests

Our benches and table sets seat 8 people and there can be around 9 per Tipi. (72 seated) It all depends on how you want to use the space with room for dancing, chilling out, drinks at the bar and music!

How are the tipis constructed?

Our experienced team of tipi crew will be on site a day or two prior to your event to measure out and construct the tipis. The same goes for the de-rig, usually the morning after your event.
The rigging of tipis is a technical job, taking up to 8 hours for a 3 tipi with a small team of 4-5 riggers. Therefore we cannot allow you to use your own staff as our team is trained for this purpose.

How big is the space?

Each Giant Hat tipi is 10.3 metres in diameter with the sides down, and 13 metres with all of the sides raised. The amount of ground space required is dependent on how many tipis you need and your chosen configuration. Our floor plans & prices page gives
several examples and measurements.

Should I book a planner?

YES!

They really help minimise the stress of the event, especially for destination weddings.
We are happy to help with some of the planning by recommending some of our trusted suppliers that we have used in the past. However at this stage, we want our focus to be on your beautiful event space.

FIRE SAFETY

If I have a fire pit, do I need a staff member to maintain it?

No, looking after the fire is easy to do your-self with proper instruction.
It is important to be available for the final handover of the tipis after the team have rigged to go through all the correct safety procedures.

How do I use the smoke caps?

Once we have set up your tipis, our Team Leader will show you how to build and maintain the fire and how to open the smoke caps correctly. Smoke caps MUST be opened when the fire is in use as they are the chimney.

FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES

Do you provide lighting?

Yes. We have Festoons for around the mid poles and fairy lights up the main poles. We believe this is enough lighting but if you want more then contact Grenville at Entertainment solutions or Inlight.

What is the flooring made of?

Made in the UK our synthetic coconut matting is the perfect way to create a seamless finish inside the tent. We supply a waterproof membrane underneath all our matting. It is also very high heel proof! If you feel you want a harder surface, please take a look at our dance floor.

Do you have any other things for hire?

Yes we do, we love sourcing special items to personalise the tipis with. Take a look at our finishing touches for hire.

UTILITIES

Do you supply power to site?

Not directly. We often take electricity from nearby buildings, but if this isn’t possible we can help organise a generator for you. The size of generator will depend on how much all suppliers need (caterers/band etc.)

Do you provide facilities for caterers?

Most caterers will provide their own facilities, however we have a small ‘Mini Hat’ tipi which is perfect cover for food prep, service area or bar.

Do you provide heating?

We have an awesome tipi heater available to hire.

What about when it’s warm in summer?

NZ weather is very changeable,  we always recommend having a source of heat to keep your guests warm and cosy.
Tipis provide shade and the tipi smoke cap can be opened to allow warm air to move up and out of the tipis.

Do you provide toilets?

No, but we can recommend Hirepool and Lux Loos – two companies we have used before.

  • Last night we got to enjoy a tipi gathering with our G&G friends and fam. So magical. I was too busy in the moment to capture it (I’d say that was a good night). So sharing this one instead by @rachel_wybrow which captures the tipi soul pretty epically ✨
  • Hope you all had a great weekend! Lots of happy tipi folk. It may have been a little wet but they all stayed dry and cosy under the canvas. Cheers to that! 📷 @rachel_wybrow

  • Three-Pi in all her glory. Mingling with the gorgeous fashiony peeps @breastcancercure event last week. • I’ve had an affinity to @zambesisince79 since I wore a Zambesi dress to my high school ball (over 20 years ago). Matched with a pair of vintage Doc’s from K’road - I felt like the bees knees. So to see such an iconic kiwi brand showcasing in our tipis last week was pure magic. 🖤💫
  • Wow we’ve been to some awesome events the past couple of weeks. From the @theblackseeds gig @cargobrewery to a private party for @touchofspice_nz organised by @jacquispice to another private party at a stunning waterfront property (a little hard to access-sorry tipi crew) and then last night @breastcancercure fashion show with @zambesisince79 and dining by the team at @artisan_catering. Did I just do a digital name drop, maybe but still. I’m super proud and grateful. Thank you to all you lovely people for choosing us to be part of your event. We’ve received so many comments like ‘the tipis made the party’ which just makes my heart sing! So cool to be sharing the tipi love. Bring on next week and a three-pi wedding for a lovely local family. Woohoo #lovewhatwedo #grateful #summershere #letsdothis 📷@hollywallacephotosfilms
